A financial analysis was carried out for Tepekong Cina Substation as for May 2009. Cost analysis focus on maintenance cost due to fuse replacement while loss analysis focuses on profit decrease due to downtime.

When evaluating the cost of maintenance various aspect taken into consideration which includes transportation cost and material cost. The substation is located 20km from SESB Tawau and it will takes about RM 7.30 of diesel for a round trip to the substation. 29 breakdowns recorded from the substation hence total transportation cost is RM211.70. Material used which is a ‘J’ type fuse is RM 5 and total fuse replaced for May 2009 is 35; brings total material cost of RM 175. The add-up of transportation cost and material is the maintenance cost which is RM 386.70.

Total downtime is 2669 min and the number affected consumer is 365. Assuming each consumer used 300kWh per month and tariff applied is RM0.28; the downtime loss is RM 1833.14. It is an estimated value only considering the domestic and not the commercial consumer.

Total loss due to interruption cause by blown fuse at Tepekong Cina Substation is the add-up of maintenance cost and downtime loss which is RM 2219.84. If the problems persist, every year SESB will have to invest RM 4640 for the substation maintenance and bear losses of RM 21997 from power outage.
